Everybody Hates Funerals was the 17th episode of Everybody Hates Chris. It premired on February 23, 2006. It was written by Alyson Fouse and directed by Matt Shakman.
SHORT SUMMARY: Chris' beloved grandfather (Jimmie Walker) dies while paying a visit to Rochelle and the family, and the extended family comes to town to pay their respects.
FULL RECAP: Rochelle is grieving hard for her father, who unexpectedly had a fatal coronary right in the middle of a knock-knock joke and a bite of pork chop. In a daze of pain, she seems oddly subdued despite the circus the household is becoming with her domineering mother, two eccentric aunts, and mooching brother hanging around, to say nothing of Tanya and Drew taking advantage of the situation. She dutifully and numbly puts up with her guests and helps with the casket selection other arrangements, blithely taking her mother's onslaught of blistering criticisms. Chris does like the perks associated with bereavement(such as getting to skip tests at school and the symathy of his classmates) but after he loses his temper and yells at his grandmother for picking on his mom, he ends up scolded for his poor behavior. It takes hitting Rochelle a bit too close to home for comfort to snap her out of her funk and bring her back to her endearing shrill self.
Maxine: Rochelle, can't you make a decent glass of iced tea?
Chris: Well, can't you leave her alone? It's iced tea! If you're thirsty, well, then you drink it! If you're not, don't!
Narrator: I would be joining my grandfather sooner than I expected.
Maxine: Are you gonna sit there and let that boy talk to me like that? [to Chris] Boy, don't you know I'll knock you into another family?
[Chris is sitting on a sofa with a white family]
White mom: Who are you?
Chris: You don't wanna know.
Chris: Who's there?
Gene: [feeling pain] Oh, Lorrrrrdy.
Chris: Oh, Lorrrrrdy who? [everyone laughs]
Gene: I'm dyin'…
Rochelle: I'm dyin' who?
Gene: I'm… havin'… a… heart… [dies]
Tonya: You're havin' a heart who?
Rochelle: Daddy? [silence] Daddy? [suspicious] Daddy?
Narrator: I never did find out who was there.
Narrator: My Uncle Michael was almost 40 and never had a job. He put the "um" in "bum".
